AniWe Village at CAGE24: Where Culture, Merch, and Madness Collide

In November 2024, Lagos became home to something magical.

Not just another booth at a convention. Not just a section tucked in the corner of an expo hall. This was AniWe Village, an entire anime universe we built from the ground up inside the Comic and Geek Expo (CAGE).

Over 1,000 fans poured into our world that weekend, and from the moment they stepped inside, it was clear, this wasn’t just a place to browse. It was a place to play, to connect, and to create memories.

The sound of ramen bowls clinking mixed with the click of game controllers. Anime soundtracks floated through the air as cosplayers in elaborate armor, pastel wigs, and school uniforms posed for photos at every turn. Laughter rose from the trivia corner, cheers erupted from the gaming zone, and in the middle of it all, you could feel the heartbeat of AniWe’s community.

Our Village wasn’t one thing, it was many worlds stitched together.

There was the Merchandise Market, bursting with jewelry, plushies, and collectibles you couldn’t find anywhere else. The Gaming Zone was a battleground for 1v1 showdowns and casual matches, with players and spectators alike getting caught up in the fun. The Cosplay Hub became a meeting place for veterans and first-timers alike, swapping tips, taking photos, and walking impromptu runways.

Of course, no anime space is complete without food and the AniWe Maid Café delivered, serving warm noodles and snacks to keep the energy high. Fans tested their knowledge in trivia games like Guess That Anime Opening and Name That Power, and just when it seemed the excitement couldn’t peak any higher, award-winning independent rapper and manga author Shao Dow took the stage, electrifying the crowd with his music and charisma.

Everywhere you looked, there was motion, color, and joy. It wasn’t just an event, it was a living, breathing fandom playground.

AniWe Village at CAGE24 reminded us why we do this.

For the vendor who sold out in hours because fans valued their craft.

For the gamer who made a new rival and a new friend in the same match.

For the cosplayer who heard “Can I take your photo?” for the very first time.

These moments are why AniWe exists. To create spaces where fans can be themselves fully, surrounded by people who get it. To take anime and gaming culture offline and make it tangible. To prove that we don’t need permission to take up space we just need the community and the will to build it.

And this is just the beginning.

The energy from AniWe Village didn’t fade when the doors closed, it carried into our online spaces, our Discord chats, and the plans already brewing for the future. We’re dreaming of more Villages, bigger zones, new themes, and taking this experience to cities across Nigeria and beyond.

CAGE24 was a milestone, but the road ahead is wide open. And if you were with us in AniWe Village, you’re part of the journey now.

Cosplay in Africa: The Rise of a Movement

Once considered a distant concept reserved for Tokyo, San Diego, or Paris, cosplay is now exploding across Africa and it’s rewriting the story of otaku expression on the continent.

From Lagos to Nairobi, Cape Town to Accra, fans are donning cloaks, armor, wigs, and weapon props with a distinctly African flair proving that cosplay isn’t just something we watch from afar. It’s something we do and  AniWe is proudly helping lead the charge.

What is Cosplay and Why does it resonate in Africa

Cosplay (short for “costume play”) is the art of dressing up as a character from anime, manga, comics, games, or pop culture. But it’s more than just outfits, it’s a powerful way for fans to:

  • Express identity

  • Connect with fandom

  • Celebrate creativity

For years, African youth have connected deeply with anime and gaming culture long before streaming made it accessible. Today, with growing visibility and community, cosplay has evolved into a vibrant expression of artistry, identity, and joyful rebellion.

Adding the African Twist: Cosplay, Remixed

We don’t just imitate, we innovate. African cosplayers are remixing global icons with local aesthetics, like:

  • Ankara versions of Naruto robes

  • Zula-inspired Princess Zelda

  • Black Panther x traditional chieftain looks

  • Custom characters that blend Afro mythology with anime styling

It’s not just creative, it’s a statement: “We’re fans too. And we’re here.”

The Challenges We Face And How We Rise

Let’s be real: cosplaying in Africa isn’t easy.

Common challenges:

  • Access to materials (foam, wigs, paints, etc.)

  • Weather (cosplaying in 34°C heat? Nah.)

  • Social stigma (“grown man wearing costume?” 🙄)

  • Lack of funding or support

And yet… We don’t back down.

We thrift. We craft. We learn online. We build together.

Every AniWe event is proof that creativity > constraint.

AniWe: A Home for Cosplayers in Africa

At AniWeCon, cosplay isn’t just tolerated it’s celebrated.

From our earliest events to AniWeCon23: RAGE, we’ve:

  • Hosted cosplay contests with real prizes

  • Created safe spaces for beginners and veterans

  • Showcased Afro-centric and traditional character designs

  • Encouraged workshops, photo booths, and character meetups

And at every event, the cosplay scene grows.

More people enter the arena. More stories get told. More boldness blooms.

This Is Just the Beginning

Cosplay in Africa is a rising wave, and we’re only getting started.

We are pushing limits, blending cultures, and proving that anime, games, and fandom have a powerful home on this continent.

So whether you’re a full-armored warrior, a closet cosplayer, or someone still discovering your favorite anime character, you’re welcome here.

Join us at AniWeCon25: Beyond Fury and be part of the movement.

Horimiya To Get Another Adaptation

Horimiya Sneak peak

The fan favourite anime “Horimiya” is set to receive another anime adaptation with will animate the stories that were not shown in the previous adaptation. The new adaptation is titled “Horimiya-piece”……yes also thought the pirates had been isekai’d and were now competing in the horimiya verse therefore bringing about the birth of the title, guess that was not the case though.

Horimiya-piece staff began streaming a new concept promotional video, titled the “Shuwa Kyun version,” on Sunday, you can check it out here. The anime is set to hit the screens and streaming platforms by the month of july.

For me anime lovers who hasn’t seen the previous “Horimiya”, here is a quick synopsis for you;

Hori-san appears to be a frivolous high school girl at first look, but she’s actually simple, sensible, and family-oriented. Miyamura-kun, on the other hand, appears to be an ordinary high school fanboy, but he’s actually a handsome young man with a bad-boy attitude and piercings and tattoos. A lively, pleasant narrative of school life begins when these two strangely similar students have a spontaneous run-in outside the school.
